As a Smoky Mountain family photographer, one of the questions I get asked most often is, “What should we wear for our family photos?” And I completely understand why. Choosing your own outfit is hard enough. Trying to coordinate an entire family without looking too matching, too busy, or like everyone was dressed for a completely different occasion can feel overwhelming.
So, I did the shopping for you. 🤎
I spent hours searching for 50 of the most beautiful dresses for fall family photos, and every single dress that made this list is one I would genuinely love to photograph. I chose these specifically with fall sessions in the Smoky Mountains in mind, considering how the colors, fabrics, patterns, and silhouettes will photograph against our mountain views, greenery, and changing fall leaves.
And there is something here for every body and every budget.
What Colors Photograph Best for Fall Family Photos in the Smoky Mountains?
For my own family photography sessions, I generally recommend sticking with light, warm neutrals and soft, muted colors. Cream, ivory, oatmeal, camel, tan, soft brown, dusty blue, muted pink, and other earthy shades photograph beautifully here because they complement the scenery instead of competing with it.
That doesn’t mean you can’t wear a darker dress or a pattern. You’ll see both in this guide!
The trick is balance.
If your dress is darker, colorful, or patterned, I recommend keeping the rest of your family in lighter neutral colors with minimal or no additional pattern. Your dress can be the anchor for the entire family’s wardrobe. Pull a few subtle colors from it for everyone else instead of trying to make everyone match.
For example, if Mom chooses a warm floral dress with brown, cream, and rust, Dad might wear cream and brown, while the kids wear different combinations of oatmeal, camel, or another soft color pulled from the dress.
The result looks coordinated without looking overly styled, and more importantly, it keeps the focus of your family photos where it belongs: on your family.
Fall Photo Dresses for Real Bodies, Not Just One Body Type
I was also really intentional about choosing dresses for different bodies, comfort levels, and stages of life.
There are beautiful maternity dresses for fall photos, including bump-friendly styles that give you plenty of room without sacrificing shape or movement. You’ll also find dresses with more upper-arm coverage, options that provide a little extra coverage through the lower stomach or C-section/apron-belly area, modest dresses, plus-size options, looser silhouettes, and styles for anyone who simply feels more comfortable with a little more coverage.
On the other end of the spectrum, I included some gorgeous romantic, flowy, and slightly fancier options if you want to really dress up for your session.
There isn’t one universally “flattering” dress because women aren’t all built the same, and we don’t all feel confident in the same things. My goal was to give you enough variety that you can find something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable.

I’d much rather see you in a $40 dress that fits beautifully, photographs well, and makes you feel amazing than a $200 dress you bought simply because you thought you were “supposed” to spend more for professional photos.
Timeless Outfits for Family Photos You’ll Still Love Years From Now
The other thing I kept in mind while putting this guide together was timelessness.
Family photos aren’t just for Instagram this fall. These are photographs you’re going to frame, put in albums, give to grandparents, and hopefully still love hanging on your walls years from now.
That’s why I intentionally gravitated toward timeless silhouettes, soft florals, beautiful textures, earthy colors, subtle patterns, and classic pieces rather than filling this list with whatever happens to be trending on TikTok right now.
Trends are fun, but your family photos should outlive them.
Of course, there are still pieces with personality. I don’t want everyone showing up in a beige sack just because neutrals photograph well. 😂 The goal is to find the sweet spot between something that feels like you right now and something you’re still going to love looking at ten years from now.
