My Favorite Attractions in The Smokies as a Local
If you’re planning a Smoky Mountain vacation, you’ll quickly realize there are a lot of things to do in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I was born and raised here, and while I’ve traveled enough to know there are amazing destinations all over the world, this area still has a lot to offer especially when it comes to adventure.
These are my personal favorite things to do in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge..not just tourist attractions, but places I genuinely love and recommend.
Dollywood (My Favorite Theme Park, Even After Traveling)
I’ve been going to Dollywood my entire life, and even after visiting other theme parks, it’s still one of my favorites anywhere.
There’s just something about it..the rides, the atmosphere, and the Smoky Mountain charm.
Every visit includes:
- The famous cinnamon bread from the Grist Mill
- A meal at Aunt Granny’s Restaurant
Ride-wise, I never skip:
- Wild Eagle
- Mystery Mine
- Big Bear Mountain Coaster in Wildwood Grove
You can also see Dolly Parton’s tour bus and walk through exhibits of her outfits and memorabilia.

Cool Off at Dollywood’s Splash Country or Soaky Mountain Waterpark
If you’re visiting during the summer, water parks are some of the most fun things to do in Pigeon Forge.
Splash Country has a classic, relaxed feel, while Soaky Mountain offers newer slides and a more high-energy atmosphere. Soaky also alcohol for the parents who like to enjoy an adult beverage or two- Splash country does not serve alcohol.

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies
One of the most popular indoor things to do in Gatlinburg is visiting the aquarium.
It’s perfect for:
- Families with kids
- Rainy days
- A break from the heat or cold
The underwater tunnel is always a favorite.

WonderWorks Pigeon Forge
You’ve probably seen the upside-down building on the Parkway. Inside, you’ll find:
- Interactive science exhibits
- A ropes course
- Laser tag
- Motion ride experiences
It’s one of the best family-friendly attractions in Pigeon Forge on a rainy day.

Pigeon Forge Snow
Indoor snow tubing year-round is one of the most unique things to do in Pigeon Forge.
If you’re visiting from somewhere warm, it’s a fun way to experience snow—even in the middle of summer.

Hiking in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Some of the best things to do in Gatlinburg are actually just outside town in the national park.
Easy hikes:
- Cataract Falls
- Gatlinburg Trail
Moderate:
- Grotto Falls
Challenging:
- Mount LeConte via Alum Cave Trail
(Research this one before you go.)

Swimming at the Townsend Wye
Swimming at the Townsend Wye is a true local tradition. Many of us grew up spending summer days here. Bring a blanket, pack a lunch, and enjoy your day in the refreshing mountain water and sun!
It’s:
- Free
- Scenic
- One of the most authentic Smoky Mountain experiences

Whitewater Rafting with Smoky Mountain Outdoors
Whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River is one of the most exciting outdoor things to do near Gatlinburg. There are different options depending on the level of excitement you’re looking for- but no matter what you choose it is an amazing experience.

Take a Day Trip to Biltmore Estate
About an hour and a half from Gatlinburg is the Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore Estate was built in the late 1800s by George Vanderbilt and is still the largest privately owned home in the United States. The mansion features incredible details for its time, including what’s considered the world’s first indoor swimming pool, along with grand libraries, banquet halls, and hundreds of rooms to explore. After touring the house and gardens, you can also visit the on-site winery for a complimentary tasting. My favorite times to visit are in the spring, when the floral gardens are in full bloom, and at Christmas, when the estate is covered in decorations and you can experience the magical candlelight tour.

Visit Cherokee
Just 34 miles from downtown Gatlinburg (a quick drive over Newfound Gap) is the Cherokee reservation. If you’ve ever been interested in Cherokee culture you can easily make a day trip to check out their museums, hiking trails, or maybe a visit to the casino! I like to do the drive early in the morning to catch the Elk hanging out right before you get into town. I like to picnic by the river and bring a tube, hike Mingo Falls, check out some local culture, and play a few slots and have dinner at the casino before heading home! If you’re visiting around the 4th of July you have to check out their annual Pow Wow! The pow wow is a vibrant cultural celebration featuring traditional dancing, drumming, handmade regalia, and local artisans sharing their craft. It’s an incredible opportunity to respectfully learn more about Cherokee heritage and witness traditions that have been passed down for generations.

Explore the Mountains with Gatlinburg Adventure Rentals
Renting a UTV is one of the most exciting ways to experience the Smokies beyond the busy Parkway. You can cruise through areas like Greenbrier, take the scenic drive into Cades Cove, and truly feel immersed in the mountains instead of just watching them pass by through your car window. It’s such a fun, adventurous way to spend a day — and I can’t recommend carving out time for a mountain ride enough!
